What Are Wireless Networking & Types of Wireless Connections

Types of Wireless Network Connections

WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network)

Built by connecting the access points to the edge of the wired network, wireless performs better. HiperLAN, Wi-Fi, and IEEE 802.11 are the standards of WLAN.

According to IEEE standards, WLAN is of two types:-

Infrastructure: All the endpoints are connected with a base station and communicate through it. For example, home WiFi.

Ad-Hoc: Nodes are connected in a peer-to-peer manner without a base station. It needs two or more endpoints with built-in radio transmission.

WPANS (Wireless Personal Area Networks)

WPAN works by interconnecting the devices through a wireless medium. It is a short-range network; wireless mice, motion sensors, etc., are some examples. According to IEEE, it is classified into three classes, i.e., High-rate WPAN (HR-WPAN), Medium-rate WPAN (MR-WPAN), and Low-rate WPAN (LR-WPAN). Moreover, Bluetooth, ZigBee, Infrared, Z-wave, and WBAN are some of the prominent technologies used in WPAN. It is more secure, portable, and stable in comparison to other wireless networking connections.

  • High-rate WPAN (HR-WPAN): Here, the data throughput is greater than 20 Mbps and it is defined in the IEEE 802.15.3 standard.
  • Medium-rate WPAN (MR-WPAN): Data throughput is 1 Mbps and, is defined in the IEEE 802.15.1.
  • Low-rate WPAN (LR-WPAN): Data throughput is less than 0.25 Mbps and is defined in IEEE 802.15.4.
  • WWAN (Wireless Wide Area Networks): A WWAN network expands in large geographic areas, such as entire cities or states. It is based on IEEE 802.16 standards. GSM/UMTS, WiMAX, and CDMA One/CDMA2000 are the three main technologies of WWAN. Fleet administration and mobile correspondence are some of the applications of WWAN.

It works on the principle of CSMA/CD and operates by finding the collision occurrence. Furthermore, the installation activity is cumbersome and manpower intensive. Prominent devices used in this are switch, router, and hub.

Wireless Network

Wireless networks use air as the medium of communication and are based on the standard of 802.11. It works on the principle of CSMA/CA; hence, the possibility of collision gets reduced. Moreover, in wireless networks, very little deployment time is required. Major wireless equipment used in this are wireless routers and access points.
