high-power PoE · Buyer guide
High-power PoE planning includes the installed cabling as well as the switch. Adding powered devices can change the demands on an existing cabling route even when spare ports are available. Switch power budget is one question; the installed cable and bundle conditions are another. Include the pathway review in the buying scope before committing to a larger population of powered endpoints.

High-power PoE: identify devices and cable
List device models, anticipated operating states and the route groups that carry them. Record where the cable is bundled, enclosed or exposed to elevated ambient conditions. Leviton’s PoE discussion explains that bundle temperature is an engineering consideration. Do not transfer a test condition or a generic bundle count directly to an unreviewed installation.
Tie the assessment to exact products
Ask the designer to identify the cable, conductor characteristics, cord arrangements and relevant manufacturer guidance for the proposed use. Existing labels and cable colour are insufficient. If the cabling cannot be identified reliably, make investigation a priced stage. Specify who resolves unknown construction before the powered-device rollout proceeds.

Agree a verification and change process
The order should state what evidence establishes suitability, which remedial actions are included and when another review is required. A future device substitution may alter the assessment. Record the approved population and operating assumptions at handover. Keep any building or electrical work with its responsible qualified party.
High-power PoE: assessment worksheet
Use the rows below to compare proposals. Enter the actual evidence reference, accountable owner and unresolved decision against each item. Keep provisional assumptions visible when asking bidders to revise their prices.
| Decision | Evidence to request | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Powered population | Exact models and operating states | Design input |
| Route groups | Bundle/enclosure/ambient evidence | Survey record |
| Cabling identity | Product and cord details | Compatibility review |
| Changes | New device or route condition | Reassessment trigger |
Questions buyers ask
Is spare switch wattage enough?
No. The complete power-delivery path and installed conditions also need assessment for the selected devices.
Can this article set a safe bundle size?
No. Use the applicable product guidance and competent design for actual conductor, current, ambient and installation conditions.
Should old patch cords be recorded?
Yes. They are part of the connection and may have different construction from the permanent cabling.
What if the cable brand is unknown?
Treat identification and suitability as unresolved evidence, with a clear investigation and replacement decision process.
Does a new endpoint require another review?
Check whether its requirements change the approved assumptions before treating it as an equivalent replacement.
